About
The Blue Connect mobile app was the primary product for the mobile design team at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. It allows users to manage their health insurance plan, look up procedure costs, get real-time claims status details, as well as view spending toward their deductible and out-of-pocket limits.

While my primary role was to maintain and expand the functionality of the original app, I took the initiative to update the design to a more contemporary look and feel, and create a more streamlined experience for the end user. I began the redesign proposal by modernizing the components used in the mobile app: including text fields, buttons, colors, icons, etc. I created several mockups showcasing the updated visuals and user experience that I presented to the head of design and other stakeholders. The refreshed components I created directly contributed back to the overall design system used by other teams.
My role
I worked as the Lead Designer of the mobile team at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. I handled the UX and Visual design, and worked closely with stakeholders, developers, and content writers to take work from initial feature requests to the final product. My team was responsible for the Blue Connect mobile app, as well as the Agent NC app used by Blue Cross Blue Shield agents.
My roles included:
-
Close collaboration with content writers, developers, and stakeholders to turn concepts into an optimized experience for our users.
-
Management of UX and Visual design. Creation of polished designs as well as detailed spec sheets and annotations to be handed to the development team.
-
Creation and maintenance of the design system and component library.

Although I wasn’t part of the team when the redesigned app officially launched, it’s been incredibly rewarding to see that many of the design decisions and visual directions I contributed were implemented in the final product. Seeing my work carried forward and reflected in the live app years later reinforces the lasting impact of thoughtful, user-centered design. This project was a meaningful reminder that strong design systems, clear documentation, and collaborative processes can have real impact for real people.
